Dr. Seuss Kids Room

The next room in our home tour is my favorite room in the house because it was the most fun to design and create! The Dr. Seuss kids room, inspired by our family’s favorite author, is currently my son’s bedroom. It is bright, fun, inspiring, and creative.

This is what you first see when you enter the room.

The toddler bed I got off Craigslist for $40 and painted black. The mattress was $80 from Target. The blanket was a splurge, I paid $42 for the amazing cuddle fleece material it is made out of. I did use a 40% off coupon so that could have been $70. My talented mother sewed it up for us. It has numerous characters from Dr. Seuss books on one side and red and white stripes (like Cat in the Hat’s hat) on the other side. It is super warm to keep my kid cozy in this basement bedroom. Sometimes it gets to be around 60 degrees down there! Who am I kidding, I’m just trying to justify an expensive blanket. Anyway, the sheet was $0.25 at a garage sale (multi-colored polka dots!) and the pillows/pillowcase totaled $6.

My sister gave me this old dresser for free and I bought $6 sticker paper to draw the DIY “decals” on the side of it.

Pictured below is a table and chair set I transformed from a dingy $6 garage sale set to an adorable Cat in the Hat inspired play set.

The $7 clearance curtains were from Shopko and were too long, but the perfect bright blue. My mother hemmed these the right length for me. I unfortunately do not have sewing skills. The cafe rod to hang them I bought at Menard’s for $3. The blocks that say “READ” used to say “EMMA” but I painted over them. I got them at a garage sale for $1.

The bookshelf I made from scrap wood, leftover paint, and free-with-rebate Menards supports. It was easy and cost $0. The book collection is quite pricey, but fortunately for us, cost us a total of $1.50. I’ve only bought 3 of our 36 books (at garage sales) and the rest came from presents. My goal is to have the entire 60 book collection of all Seuss books for this Dr. Seuss kids room. Or at least the 44 he wrote and illustrated. This is what we ask for as gifts for our kids every year, and they love it!

The stuffed animals were all found at a thrift store. Thank you to whoever bought these at Kohl’s and then donated them in perfect condition! I paid $15.50 for all.

The large frame was a hand-me-down from my mother-in-law. I made a poster of inspirational sayings from Dr. Seuss books. My favorite one on there is “A person’s a person no matter how small” from Horton Hears a Who.

And lastly, the mural cost me nothing but time. I used leftover paint from the HHW facility and scrap wood for the 3D trees.

The total for our Dr. Seuss kids room is $208.25. For this inexpensive design, I utilized my artistic talent more than my credit cards. Sometimes you have to try some DIY craftiness to save money, and sometimes it turns out as good as you hoped!

  1. I bet this is one of your favorite rooms in the house (even though it’s a kids room). The Dr. Seuss theme is such a fun one. Loved how you were able to achieve this look on a low budget.

  2. How cute is this room!! Seriously, great work, Melissa!! My kids’ room is screaming to be made over – I have more ideas than I do time, though. lol Once my two little ones start preschool next year (if I let them go, that is..not sure I can do that but we’ll see…lol), I will be doing so much more in regards to furniture upcycling, decor, and handmade furniture from reclaimed wood.

    1. Thank you Charlotte! It seems like you get a lot done already with having two littles around. Are they twins? P.s. I’m not sending my kids to preschool, no harm in that!

  3. I am so jealous of your painting / drawing skills! You are amazing! I am currently planning a Dr Seuss nursery, and I love many of your pieces (especially the table / chairs and the dresser), but I have absolutely NO drawing ability! I am having to resort to stickers and buying Dr Seuss books at the used store and cutting pictures out of them 🙁 It breaks my heart to have to destroy his work. Anyway…. I think you did an amazing job on this room. Way to go!

    1. Jenn,

Thank you for the heartfelt compliment! I think Dr. Seuss’s whole point in his children’s books was to ignite children’s imaginations. Making a colorful and interesting room for your children is doing just that and I think Dr. Seuss would be supportive of that goal, even if it meant cutting up pictures in his books. Good luck with your nursery!

  4. Did the room come framed out that way? I love the way the mural is out from the wall and you can place items on it. How far out does it stick out? That would be perfect for my grandkids room I am fixing up in my house. My granddaughters have moved past Dr. Seuss (it makes me so sad i love his books!) And they both love the Disney princesses. I could see alot of possibilities for decorating a edge(for lack of a better name) like that in their room. I could see doing a recessed castle to hold the many princess dolls we have over here for when they come or even a recessed book shelf! It’s just beautiful! You did a wonderful job!

    1. Thank you Dorothy! Yes, the room has a bump-out in the wall because it is a bi-level, split foyer floor plan. The whole basement has that around the bottom half of the wall. You have great ideas! Thanks for stopping by my blog.

  5. How cute !!! I am sure your Son love it and you did a great job, felicitations Melissa Woods !

  6. Love, love, love this, especially the table and chairs! I just found out I’m going to have a granddaughter, who’s big brother, Theo, will have just turned 3 when she is born. I think this would be a great present for him – something that he can share with his new sister by his own invitation!
