Living Room

Welcome to our living room! This room changed a lot over the five years we have lived here. I think it is because it is the first room most people walk into (besides the foyer) when they enter our home and I want it to be just right. The first room gives the first impression and can tell you a lot about a family. Below you can see the stairs visitors climb when entering our home.

When we first bought our house, we purchased a cheap brown sectional and I did my best with furniture arrangement.

Soon after we moved in, we got new white windows, which made a big difference in the room! After about a year of changing things, I ended on this design for a while:

use

The beige carpet and beige walls were originally here when we moved in. Boring, right? We were given these beige couches for free from relatives. Beige on beige on beige just doesn’t work for me, so I added lots of color in accessories, curtains, and the showpiece, the coffee table. I am an artist and everything on walls of my house was done by me. The large piece above the couch is very close to my heart. It is about 3 ft by 5 ft and on it I painted an abstract interpretation of our family’s beginning story with the W monogram for Woods. The first time I put it up, it breathed life into the room.

Our living room flows into the dining room and then to the kitchen. It’s a great gathering space.

The TV cabinet was eventually replaced with a barn window table I custom built for the room. Also, new end tables I built from bar stools.

Then, in 2016, I spent a great deal of time revamping the whole space! We finally switched out the beige couches with something more my taste.

I created that HUGE wall canvas and painted new artwork for a new, monochromatic color scheme.

I LOVE this giant abstract piece of artwork as wall decor in the living room. What a stunning way to decorate above the sofa couch.

I bought old lamps and revamped them: spray painting the base as well as creating new lamp shades from embroidery hoops & posterboard.

Living room club chairs

I hung up this spider plant with a diy macramé hanger. I upcycled this adorable little bench into an ottoman by painting and upholstering it.

Upholster and paint a little bench to turn it into a comfortable ottoman in the living room.

I bought new end tables (used off Craigslist) and painted ALL the trim white in the upstairs of our home.

Next, the barn window table broke and I made shelves for our awkward little wall where the TV used to be.

An awkward wall in the living room gets custom built shelves and looks 100% better!

These shelves were a huge improvement that only cost $25!

I also tackled the stair railing and ripped out the old oak in favor of modern and a sleek, black and white design.

Stair Railing DIY Makeover. This baluster went from old, outdated oak to sleek metal bars with a modern white newel post.

You can watch the video of how I did it on my YouTube channel! I designed and built it myself.

The only thing original in the room is the wall color…this room has been through a LOT of changes!

  1. Hey! Someone in my Facebook group shared this site with us so I came to give it a look. I’m definitely loving the information. I’m book-marking and will be tweeting this to my followers! Fantastic blog and fantastic design.

  2. I Love Love the color theme ..!! Very similar to my living, but only in color. The base of my LR (living room) is Nautical/Beachy Theme😊❣ the color around it is Beach Blues, Oceans Blues, (blues&teals) & a bit of Sand Beige (light to dark brown)…

    1. Thank you, Christy! I love teals, but I didn’t want to go the nautical route. It was hard to balance that line. I’m sure your living room looks so great! Any chance you would be willing to share a picture?

  3. Melissa you truly are an artist. Of all the beautiful things I have seen on the home site, this is the first time I have ever been compelled to write a comment. Your home is amazing. I am big on upcycling also. I am in the process of redoing my son’s old bedroom and having such fun being creative and finding things around the house & garage to renew & design. Thank you for sharing your lovely home & creativety.
