Living Room Makeover Spring Home Decor

I’ve been a little sneaky lately completely redecorating my whole living room without letting you all know. If you follow me on Facebook, you saw me contemplating getting the big brown reclining couch. If you subscribe to my blog posts, you know I recently made new DIY lamps. And if you were one of the many who came over from Hometalk to see my modern macrame plant hanger, you’ve already got a glimpse of my new curtains. You’ll see these items and more in my living room makeover!

Today I’ll be sharing my eclectic home decor style alongside other bloggers with a similar aesthetic as part of the Spring Fling Home Tour blog hop hosted by my friend Stephanie who blogs at www.casawatkins.net.

I’m trying to move towards a more modern style in my home, but it’s been hard working with my beige on beige on beige 1980’s Midwest house. You’ll see more changes in upcoming posts from me over the next couple months.

So here’s what I was starting with…

Colorful living room red teal blue. This transitional style gets an eclectic modern makeover in this living room design.

Then, at various points in time, I upgraded our end tables made from bar stools, built a barn window table for the TV console, and switched out our lamp shades with ones I painted teal ombre. At my Christmas home tour, the last time my readers saw my main living room space, it looked like this:

A living room decked out with Christmas decor.

Ps. This was also before I bought my fancy new camera, so I apologize for the picture quality.

After the last couple months of change, here’s what my living room looks like today:

Living room transformation from transitional style to a modern eclectic vibe.

Living room makeover with gorgeous large wall painting, bright turquoise and teal accents, mismatched couches, and an eclectic modern aesthetic.

Totally different, right!?

As you can see, the elephant in the room is our brown La-Z-Boy recliner sofa. I’m not oblivious to the fact this couch is not visually attractive. My husband has been wanting a really comfortable couch for a long time. This is right up his alley; it has memory foam seats and reclines back all the way and my goodness is it relaxing.

Honestly, I’m still not sold. I did my best to modernize the big ugly thing (like adding that HUGE abstract painting to detract from it) but for now I’m just going to live with it.

Speaking of that huge abstract painting, I moved our family painting into the play room downstairs and replaced it with this DIY canvas (tutorial on how to create something like this soon). The painting I created with acrylics, wall paint, and water soluble inks.

The end tables I picked up secondhand from a Facebook garage sale site. I’m getting as addicted to these as I am to Craigslist.

I love this giant piece of abstract artwork over the couch!

On the other side of the living room, you’ll see my signature teal coffee table and this gorgeous mid-century inspired modern gray sofa. I was over having matching sofas. I wanted a more mismatched, eclectic vibe in my living room makeover.

Decorating and designing a living room with lots of light and tons of windows.

That coffee table was the inspiration for everything in this room. Its bright hue really is the focal point of the space!

Displaying pottery in your living room on your coffee table mugs and planter bowl.

For spring decor, I added in various greenery throughout the space. This gorgeous plant pot on my coffee table as well as the mugs are pottery made by my sister Anne. Visit her artist’s website to see more of her work–you will be amazed!

I love this modern couch, especially against the white curtains and big window letting lots of light into this living room design.

You might have already saw the modern DIY plant hanger I made to hang in the corner. You can create this macrame hanger with just string, it’s super easy.

The other things here I sourced from IKEA. The white curtains were 98″ LENDA white curtains on sale two panels for only $20! STEAL. I bought two sets. The large majesty palm I bought for $12 and split in two so I also have one in my entryway. I potted the palm in a plastic garbage can I bought for $2. It’s safe to say I had a successful IKEA trip to shop for my living room makeover!

Beautiful living room makeover with tons of DIY projects including a pallet wood sign, painted turquoise coffee table, hanging macrame planter, diy lamps, and more ideas!

I hung my pallet wood sign that reads “BElieve THEre is GOOD in the world” on the wall for the first time instead of leaning against something. I love this sign being a constant reminder to me and think its home on the wall between our living and dining rooms is the perfect spot!

Contemporary living room makeover design. Wall mounted TV, mid-century modern gray sofa, bright teal coffee table painted furniture, white curtains, pallet wood sign, and lots of plants as decor ideas!

As you can see, I moved our “buffet” dresser underneath the TV to replace the old barn window table. I’m sad to say my sister accidentally broke the glass panes of the table and we had to move it into the garage until it’s fixed. I guess what do you expect from 100 year old glass?

Cute ideas for spring home decor! I love these faux Easter eggs and nest!

Atop the dresser I have more spring touches, including this adorable faux Easter egg nest that I made last year.

Here are some fun before and afters of my living room makeover. I think they really show the transformation!

  1. It’s all so pretty! I was thinking you have it set up almost like a “his and hers” type space. How fun to be able to incorporate each other’s taste while decorating your home! 🙂

  2. Thank you for showing a “real life” home. In real life we have those wonderfully comfortable couches to watch tv on.

  3. The sofa isn’t that bad! It does look comfy and it’s not as bad as a burgundy reclining sofa 😉 The whole space is really beautiful and I am IN LOVE with that coffee table!

    1. Thank you Amanda! It turned out just like I envisioned. I am writing a post explaining how to make one yourself coming up soon. Sign up for my newsletter so you don’t miss it! Thanks for commenting and complimenting 🙂

  4. Your home is beautiful! I love the cabinet that is no longer in the room tho…get it fixed LOL! I love the look of the soft white window treatments and I think you could do the same in the kitchen/dining area. I have to have curtains on my windows because I think it feels warmer in the winter and I don’t like my in-laws (live next door) having the ability to look into my home. Have you thought about an area rug in front of hubby’s sofa? A coffee table there too? I am just curious and want to learn from others. I have never had a living room or dining room that I felt was decorated well…I was never happy with my attempts, so I am trying to learn from others so I can use that knowledge to help find my style. Thank you for your time.

    1. Thank you Lisa! I think the curtains did make the biggest impact on the feel of the room, just like you said. I have thought about an area rug because I love how they ground the space and add interest. I’ve never put one over carpet before although I’ve seen others do it and it’s beautiful. I will consider it further because you reminded me it might be a great idea. However, I would not add another coffee table in the space. I think the one I have should be the focal point of the room, especially with how “loud” it is. You should get involved in some design Facebook groups and online forums to ask for help when designing your living room. I’ve found Houzz and Hometalk to be helpful! I’m sure just trying different things, you’ll land on a living room design you love. I have a secret for you: I don’t love this living room design in my home I wrote about here. In fact, I’ve already switched things around and if you stay tuned to my blog, you’ll get to see the changes I made to my living room design very soon. Thanks for dropping by!
