I have mentioned my artistic sisters before, even featured Anne’s handmade ornaments on my blog once, so today I’m proud to share a fun project Paula completed. Paula does massage and just got a new office she co-leases with her friend, Kelly. They worked together to achieve an Old World style in the space and give it more character. She gave me permission to share her faux brick and plaster wall with you today!

I can’t take any credit for this project, except for that I gave Paula the idea to use a roll of wallpaper for the faux brick. She was planning to paint the faux brick by hand, but as I warned her from experience with my faux tile backsplash, that would take a LOT of time.

Chip off plaster to create brick and plaster faux finish.
When they got started, the office was just a boring space with plaster walls. It did have a beautiful wood plank ceiling and craftsman windows going for it, though.

Use a drywall knife to chip off plaster.
They used a metal scraper to chip away pieces of plaster from the wall.

Plaster chipped off the wall, ready for a faux brick wall paper finish.
If you are going to attempt something like this, be sure to cover all surfaces as there ends up being lots of dust particles. Also, be sure to test for lead paint! Lead paint is toxic and should not be messed with!

The room before the faux finish was applied, plaster chipped off and ready for wall paper.
A quick coat of white paint covered the pattern that was on the wall before.
The next step was to adhere faux brick wallpaper in the spaces where the plaster had been chipped off. Can you believe this brick wallpaper looks so realistic and only costs $25!?

How to apply a faux brick and plaster wall finish!
Apply wallpaper according to manufacturer’s directions! Be sure to smooth from the middle out to avoid any bubbled up areas.

Paula used an xacto knife to cut the wallpaper around the edges of the plaster.

The edge of the plaster chipped off matches right up to the faux brick wall paper giving the finish a realistic look.
With the brick wallpaper inset like this, it gave the finish a more realistic look!

Covering florescent lights with draped fabric is a great way to soften harsh lighting.
Lastly, they gave the space softer lighting by covering the lamps with draped burlap.

Apply a faux brick and plaster wall in small spaces to give character and charm.
The one roll of brick wallpaper Paula purchased was enough to complete a wall in the bathroom as well as wrap a large pillar in the reception area.

Use a roll of faux brick wallpaper (only $20!) to create this brick and plaster wall finish. This give the room Old World style!
The finishing touches included plants, reception chairs, and a faux fireplace.

Old World charm and character.

This space turned out so charming and the faux brick and plaster wall really made the room!

This faux brick wall paper is only $20 a roll. I used one roll to create this brick and plaster wall as well as create a faux brick pillar.
Stay tuned for another project completed for this office, I’ve been helping my sister create a larger reception desk built with reclaimed wood! Tell me what you think of this style? Would you consider a faux finish on your wall to give a room more character?

  1. The space looks incredible, y’all did a fantastic job! Only thing is to make sure you check with your landlord because not all of them will agree to a tenant chipping plaster off the walls.

    1. I think you can still achieve the look with drywall, but maybe you should skip the step of chipping off the wall. Drywall doesn’t chip off in layers like plaster does. Good luck!

      1. I’m very interested in the look of this wall. It reminded me of Charlie Sheen’ s condo in Wall Street. Fell in love with the style. However, I have plaster wall but I was going to put up dry how can you achieve the same effects. Could I use brick face instead

  2. I have never left a comment before. But this looks pretty sharp. You really did do an absolutely fantastic job! Very professional looking. Thank you for sharing and kudos for a job well done.

  3. As a Renter, I’m going to ask a stupid question. First, it came out looking so real and , as someone else said earlier, it looks like a professional job. Now you’ve gone and made me want to do this to the wall behind my bed. ( without the chipping of course ). So my question is, is this type of wallpaper removable when I decide to move? Or should I wait till I buy my own place? Thank you for sharing this with us!

    1. Thank you, Michael! If you use wallpaper adhesive that specifies it is removable, you should be good to go! I can’t wait to hear how trying this project goes for you. Please stop back again to share.
