Minimalist Master Bedroom Makeover

I’ve been sharing many posts lately about our projects completed for our master bedroom: the curtain rod hack, the DIY mirror frame, my watercolor artwork, and refinishing the mid-century modern dresser set. All of these have been leading up to this moment! Our minimalist master bedroom makeover final reveal!

This is what the bedroom looked like when we moved in. The crown molding along the top of the wall was backlit (oh joy). Plus it was mounted six inches below the ceiling in some places because the ceiling is curved. Needless to say, that was the first thing removed.

The other side of the room featured a wood-wrapped chimney and old trim/doors that didn’t match. I overviewed everything in the video if you’re too lazy to scroll down. It’s okay, I won’t judge.

The Master List

It might be impossible to list every single thing I changed in this room, but I’ll do my best.

  • Remove crown molding and backlit LED strips
  • Washed down all the walls and blinds
  • Painted walls semi-gloss white
  • Painted ceiling flat white
  • Replaced old oak trim around the windows with 1″ x 4″ pine lumber I primed and painted semi-gloss white
  • Replaced door with two panel white door and matte black door knob
  • Installed the 1″ x 4″ pine lumber trim around the door jambs
  • Caulked all the trim
  • Filled nail holes and imperfections in the trim with joint compound, then sanded smooth.
  • Painted over all the trim in the room with one last coat of semi-gloss white.

And at this point, I was finally done making the walls look good

    1. I did not spend much to put together this bedroom! I bought the bed frame new from Walmart, but the rest I DIY’ed. The mirror I got secondhand and framed it with pine lumber from the hardware store. The dresser set I got secondhand from Facebook marketplace and painted the drawers white to update it. The curtain rod I saved money by making it out of conduit. These are just some ideas! Please peruse my site to find money-saving decor and upcycle projects to help you! 🙂
