Black Modern Dresser Redo: Cut ‘n Paste With O’verlays

I had so much fun last time I competed in the Fab Furniture Flippin’ Contest, I wanted to do it again! This month, a group of bloggers worked with O’verlays to refinish a piece of furniture. There is an old dresser I’ve wanted to redo since purchasing it for $30 off of Craigslist a few years ago. The clean lines of this piece give it loads of potential! With the help of the contest, I was able to complete a modern dresser redo!

Old dresser with outdated knobs.

The dresser had wooden knobs on each drawer. Initially, the whole thing was stained, but shortly after I bought it, I painted the top and knobs. Now it was time to paint the whole thing!

This old, outdated dresser gets a modern redo for a fab furniture flip you don't want to miss!

The plan for this dresser was to replace the knobs with something more modern. I love the look of long metal handles frequently on IKEA furniture, but I didn’t want to spend the $. Instead, I cut strips of wood 13″ long, spray painted them silver, and screwed them onto each drawer using the existing screw holes.

These aren't metal handles. I cut strips of wood, spray painted them silver, and screwed them into existing knob holes for a super modern hardware look for no $.

After completing the new handles and painting the whole dresser gloss black, the last step was to add the O’verlays. O’verlays sponsored the Fab Furniture Flippin’ Contest this month, sending their product to elevate furniture design for each participating blogger. I picked out four geometric panels which I attached to the sides of the dresser.

A modern black dresser furniture flip transformation. Love this redo!
Working with these paintable, lightweight panels to design my modern dresser redo was simple and gave it a much more interesting look!

Use O'verlays to create modern designs on your furniture!
I think it would also be really stunning to add these O’verlays to the drawers of a dresser. There are more examples on how to use the different designs on the O’verlays website.

As you can see, the dresser found a home in my master bedroom. The black mirror above it was created for the previous dresser which resided there. It goes with the new dresser just perfectly, though, doesn’t it!?

Love this before and after furniture makeover! This outdated dresser had clean lines and was made to be something super modern and stylish with overlays and some paint.

Special thanks to the hosts of the Fab Furniture Flippin’ Contest for inspiring me once again to transform an outdated piece into something modern!

  1. Your dresser looks so elegant now with the silver and black. Especially with the black mirror above it. And using wood painted silver for the handles is just genius.

  2. It was a beautiful piece before, but you transformed the into such a sleek, modern gorgeous piece, especially paired with that mirror. Nice job!!

  3. I have checked out a lot of redo’s. This is the most amazing thing I have seen yet! Great job!

  4. I found you via Hometalk. I love the look and I think it looks like a million now. Is it difficult to open the drawers without grooves? I would like to copy this. No dressed yet though. I am in the planning/wishing stage of painting my narrow, long living room combo dining room (ugly paneling a pale grayish white. Also my ugly orange brick fireplace a little darker gray. Does that sound okay to you? A dresser like yours would be my cup of tea for a sideboard.

    1. Gray is really in right now and I think contrasting the fireplace in a darker color is a great idea! The drawers of this dresser do stick a bit when you open and close them, but my husband and I don’t mind. It sounds like you and I both have a similarly modern style!

  5. Melissa, Impressive redo. Really enjoyed your creative use of silver painted woood strips for handles. May I suggest rubbing the areas where drawers stick with a bar of dry soap. Works wonders on painted or unfinished wood

  6. Hi!
You didn’t mention how you painted the dresser. Did you need to sand down the stain? I would like to paint my dresser but dread the sanding and prep work.

    1. I did sand it down, then I applied a primer, two coats of paint and seven coats of poly. I’ve painted furniture the fast way before and it never holds up. Enjoy the process, more work makes the end result all the more satisfying.

    1. I used the existing holes in the dresser from the knobs, and just drilled screws into the strip of wood. So each strip of wood, the “pulls” are held on by two screws. Thanks for the compliment!
