Ottoman Makeover “Spray It Pretty” by HomeRight

This past week I have been busy transforming an adorable little piece of furniture. Well, it didn’t start out so adorable. I found this guy at a garage sale and loved that it had some storage as well as rolled on casters. I thought it would be the perfect candidate for an ottoman makeover. This is what it looked like when I bought it (for $8).

Complete with cobwebs…ew.

You might be surprised to see I redid a piece of furniture in January temperatures (I do live in Minnesota, after all). However, I was able to join the Fab Furniture Flippin Contest this month sponsored by HomeRight and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity. HomeRight supplied 25 bloggers with a complimentary paint sprayer to use in our furniture upcycle. I have wanted a paint sprayer ever since I painted my first piece of furniture. Who cares if it is below zero degrees outside; I will find a way.

With help from my little lady, the hardware was removed to begin the ottoman makeover.

We cleaned the casters and handles with acetone to get the red paint off and then spray painted them silver.

To use the sprayer, I set up a corner of my sister’s heated garage with plastic drop clothes. When I opened up my brand new sprayer, I was so excited. Seriously, how have I not gotten one of these before?! My new sprayer is perfect for smaller size jobs and I see myself getting a lot of use out of it. Definitely a must for those of you who refinish furniture.

Once the piece underwent my signature painting method, I was ready to upholster. I envisioned this ottoman makeover including a comfy cushion on top. I used leftover foam I had from those toy storage crates I made last year and batting to layer a cushion on the ottoman.

I did have to slice that egg crate foam in half using a serrated knife because it was too thick. The fabric remnant I picked up for $2.50 at a thrift store. Before starting, I ironed the fabric smooth. First I lay the fabric down, then the batting, then the flat side of the foam, and last, a piece of plywood cut to the size of the ottoman.

Fold it up and staple! My air compressor has really come in handy since I received it as a gift 2 years ago. I also used it to do my most recent home improvement project: replacing the stair railing. I can use it for brad nails and staples. If you want one, get one like this.

Anyway, when the cushion was done, I simply used liquid construction adhesive to glue it down on top of the ottoman.

Ottoman Makeover

Ottoman makeover, a storage bench on casters got a paint job, updated hardware, and an upholstered cushion.

It looks just right for throwing up your feet and relaxing with a home decor magazine. I have all the time in the world to do that, don’t you?

Upholster a bench or ottoman the easy way! This photo tutorial will show you how.

Ottoman makeover including a step-by-step tutorial for how to make a cushion that sits on top of the furniture. I love this modern, white piece and could also see it used as a bench!

Buying that faux fur sheepskin rug was a good decision, how comfy does this look!?

Great idea for living room furniture! This ottoman makeover allows the piece to do double duty as storage, an comfy place for your feet, and extra seating as a bench!

I am grateful for the people at HomeRight for sponsoring this contest and the wonderful hosts of the Fab Furniture Flippin Contest who organized it all. Head over to the contest page to see other bloggers’ “Spray It Pretty” furniture makeovers and vote for me!

The ottoman makeover was definitely a success! Here’s the before and after…
