Wood Sign Wedding Present of Last Name
This past weekend, we traveled to Rochester for Thanksgiving to stay with my husband’s family. It reminded me that we were actually just down there in September celebrating a really special wedding. Stephen’s dad got remarried to a beautiful woman and this past weekend, I saw the gift I had made for them hanging on their wall! In honor of their fresh start, I created a wood sign wedding present with their new shared last name, Blissenbach.

First I grabbed a scrap piece of pallet wood I had laying around and sanded it. This opens up the pores of the wood so that it take stain better. After wiping off all the dust with a damp cloth, I let it dry.

Next, using a yard stick, I measured the length of the board and divided it by the number of letters in the last name. Blissenbach is quite lengthy, so I divvied up each letter into about 3 inches. The letters I did draw freehand in pencil, erasing as I made mistakes and typing it on the computer for reference.

After the last name was spelled out, I penciled in lightly the first names at the top and the date they were married at the bottom.

Next, I simply colored in my pencil lines with black permanent marker.

I sanded the last name to wear away some of the marker ink, then went back in and outlined it. These are just stylistic choices, I like the added interest this gives the text.

Then the next step was simply to stain it!

After one coat of espresso colored stain, it was done!

The finished product was just as I envisioned! This wood sign wedding present is meant to be hung on the wall and fits perfectly above a standard doorway. The happy couple said they loved the sign, so I was excited to see it hanging in their home!
